Region at a glance 700km North of Perth In the heart of the spectacular lower Murchison district, Sandstones’ bronzed landscape contains many picturesque locations offering an authentic outback experience in a captivating, friendly town. Gold was first discovered near Sandstone in 1894 and the area remains popular for the casual gold prospector. In the early 1900s Sandstones’ population was some 7000 people, a stark difference to todays 50 or so locals. Fortunately, Sandstone survives and thrives as an ideal stopover at the centre of some of WAs great tourist routes.
Sandstone Night Sky An unbeatable view that’s truly spectacular is the deep, dark night sky splashed with millions of stars. Sandstone is a stargazer and astrophotographers dream. The Milky Way over London Bridge being a must-have astrophotography capture. Plus, the Astrodome in town operates during the peak season with a quality telescope to get the best views of the planets and constellations (as available). So, stop in at Sandstone, stay a while, and be surprised at the beauty of this small outback town, it’s friendly people and the inviting atmosphere.
Sandstone Heritage Trail Drive the 18km Heritage Trail discovering a series of natural and historically significant sites, including the breakaway brewery cave and the natural basalt formation of over 350 million years old – London Bridge! Sandstone Town The Visitor Centre has all the local information from wildflowers to community events. Attached to the centre is an intriguing little museum with many artefacts, photos and stories from Sandstones early years; learn about the gold rush, the pastoralists and the everyday life of those who lived a remote life in the early 1900s. From there, wander the quaint Sandstone streets, breathe in the fresh air, and visit the many historic buildings and interesting sites including the Pioneer Park and bright painted murals.
