Turn inland from the coast to uncover the outback. With wide skies and red dirt, the bold colours invite you to follow in the footsteps of European settlers who began large pastoral stations in what became sheep, goat and cattle country. Magic dirt This road trip starts in the sunny coastal city of Geraldton on Australia’s Coral Coast or in the township of Yalgoo, in Australia's Golden Outback. In spring, wreath flowers bloom on the drive to the town of Pindar. Now it’s time to hit the red dirt north to Murchison Settlement. Outback colours come alive as you pass vast landscapes, station country, historic homesteads, and plenty of wildlife. Outback oasis On the way from Murchison Settlement to Gascoyne Junction, beat the heat at Bilung Pool. One of only a few permanent water holes on the seasonal Wooramel River, this oasis is also beautiful for bird watching.

Gascoyne Junction, a centre built on wool but now cattle country, makes a good base to explore Australia’s biggest rock, Mount Augustus (Burringurrah). Linger longer On the long drive to Exmouth, you’ll find Honeycomb Gorge in Kennedy Range National Park. You might choose to add another day to do some hiking and camping. Marvel at endless stretches of sky, natural springs, cliffs, canyons and a wide variety of birds and wildlife. Experience outback hospitality with a station stay at Melangata Station or Bullara Station. Gone fishin’ This trip ends in Exmouth where you can cast a reel or head out to enjoy the spectacular Ningaloo Reef.
