Kalgoorlie & the Goldfields

Ghostly Gwalia Sons of Gwalia was once the deepest mine in WA. Wander this “living” ghost town of abandoned homes and businesses, or browse the Gwalia Historical Museum. You can even stay at historic bed and breakfast Hoover House, named after the young mining manager who would later become the 31st President of the USA, Herbert Hoover. Stretch yourself The Explorers Hall of Fame in Laverton celebrates early pioneers including John Forrest. On your way back to Leonora, turnoff to the now closed Windarra mine and take the steep climb to the summit of Mount Windarra. It provides a lookout across the former Windarra Nickel Project and sweeping 360-degree views across the Northern Goldfields region.

Going for gold On the road back to Perth stop in Coolgardie, which was known as the birthplace and unofficial capital of the Eastern Goldfields at the height of its prosperity. It’s home to the Goldfields Exhibition Museum, which has one of Australia’s biggest antique bottle collections, dating from 300BC.
