Region at a glance 542km North-East of Perth The Shire of Ngaanyatjarraku spans 159,948 sq km, showcasing diverse natural beauty from the Rawlinson Ranges to the red sandy stretches of the Gibson and Great Victoria Deserts. Distinctive red sands and vast blue skies provide a striking backdrop for arid flora and fauna, while rocky escarpments and unique landforms add texture to the landscape. There are 10 Aboriginal communities in the shire, totalling about 1,650 residents. Warburton, located on the Great Central Road, serves as the main regional centre. The Great Central Road is the shire’s principal route, forming part of the 2,800km Outback Way that links Laverton in Western Australia to Winton in Queensland, passing through iconic outback landscapes, including Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Key features along the route include the Rawlinson Ranges, Walter James Ranges, and Gill Pinnacle.

Notable places to visit Tjulyuru Cultural and Civic Centre, Warburton features Ngaanyatjarra artworks and the world’s largest collection of community-owned Aboriginal art. Visitors can also browse arts, crafts, and publications at the Warta Shop. Giles Weather Station, Warakurna Established in 1956, this functioning weather station allows visitors to observe the daily 8.45am CST weather balloon release. Yarla Kutjarra Rest Stop Located between Warburton and Warakurna, this site offers a peaceful camping spot, provided by the Ngaanyatjarra people, away from culturally sensitive areas.
