Region at a glance 764 km North of Perth Meekatharra, 764 km north of Perth, is a welcoming hub for travellers exploring Western Australia’s Golden Outback. Established in the late 1800s as a pastoral and prospecting settlement, the town blends rich Aboriginal heritage with the transformative history of the rangelands. Gazetted in 1903, its name comes from the Yamatji word Mikadah, meaning “place of little water.” Today, it is home to the Wajarri Yamatji, Yugunga Nya, Nharnuwangga, Gingirana, Nyiyaparli, and Ngarlawangga peoples. The Shire of Meekatharra promotes the Murchison GeoRegions “ancient lands and brilliant skies,” where striking geological formations, expansive

stargazing, and significant cultural sites can be explored. This forms part of a self-drive trail linking 21 sites across seven Shires (see: murchisongeoregion.com). Meekatharra is well-equipped for RV travellers, offering potable water at Welcome Park on Main Street and a dump point behind the Shire Office on Lane Way B. Essential services include a hospital, chemist, GP clinic, visiting specialists, post office, and 24-hour fuel. For recreation, the town provides a skate park, playgrounds, gymnasium, sports complex, tennis, squash and basketball courts, and a swimming pool. The highlight of the community calendar is The Spirit of Meekatharra Festival . Formerly the Meekatharra Outback Festival, its new name

reflects more than location or tradition. It celebrates the town’s greatest strength — a vibrant, inclusive, and creative community spirit that continues to define life in the heart of the outback.
